Career Milestone Unlocked! ✅

When I started out on this journey toward becoming a fiction author, I had no idea what to expect. It turned out to be a lot harder, a lot more entrepreneurial, and a lot more work than I anticipated.

The writing and editing are the stumbling blocks people typically cite when they say they aren't sure they can become a writer, but it's the non-writing work that nobody appreciated until they are in the middle of it.

Trying to get the word out about your work across the requisite channels of our incredibly fragmented media landscape (eye-opening TikTok experience, anyone?) turns out to be something akin to spinning plates while not letting any of a dozen pots boil over. It's frankly exhausting and you contantly fight the feeling that you are an inch deep and a mile wide. It takes forever to start to gain traction anywhere.

Is it worth it? Totally. In fact, the whole process is turning out to be much more fun than I anticipated. It's been an opportunity to learn a whole bunch about a new craft, a new industry, and a new community. Not to mention a great creative outlet, and a small contribution to the world during troubling times.

I set out to create the kind of uncommonly decent hero character that we need more of these days. An imperfect guy doing his best to figure stuff out, right wrongs, and see the beauty that is life.

Now that I've actually gotten the first book launched into pre-orders, I feel especially validated that critics have seemed to get what I was trying to do. The first two professional reviews are in, and, not only were they both five stars, but the reviewers were definitely picking up what I was putting down.

I talk a lot more about what that review experience felt like here. All in all, it provided a much-needed confidence boost as the book entered pre-orders. I'd be a liar if I didn't say I was a little relieved.
